Dotty Kirwin ( mother of Libby Kirwin LKRE) is a New Jersey native who came to Newport as a bride almost 42 years ago.
"I'll never forget first seeing Newport as we drove off the ferry. I thought I had gone back in time to a place filled with fabulous architecture, the most charming historic homes with enormous fireplaces and extraordinary doors and windows all lined up so close to each other on cobblestone streets in a town that was immersed in history. I was hooked immediately. Having moved from an area in NewJersey where every free parcel of land had been developed into a shopping mall, Newport was untouched ,except for the new bridge which was under construction. All the shops were tiny specialty stores. ..the dress shops,, hat shop, one bakery, one pizzeria, the enchanting Leys Century Store with its creaky wooden floors, the linen shop and of course the incredible tree lined Bellevue Avenue.
In later years we actually bought a number of vacant properties there and rehabbed them into charming apartments which of course today are all condominiums .
We became involved in buying and selling in Newport in 1970. It was 20 years later when I actually decided to get my RE license. Prior to this we had bought and sold and reconstructed and painted and wallpapered and redesigned interiors and exteriors for years. Later,as a Realtor I would sell many of the properties which we had previously owned ,some of which were now condos. The first house we bought was sold to the first person who saw it and still lives there today, forty years later.
I began as a Rental Agent at a small office (Cornerstone Properties) on a corner of Thames Street( in a building we once had owned) in downtown Newport. It had great energy, wonderful walk in traffic and was filled with agents with a shared enthusiasm. It is amazing to think about the amount of business we did WITHOUT cell phones, voice-mail or MLS on the Internet. We would wait with great anticipation for the delivery of the huge MLS BOOK to be delivered. The office was always abuzz with military students, college students, investors and anxious first time buyers. Through my rental contacts I moved into Sales. I learned to love the art of the deal, the delight of the Buyer and Seller and the energy created by the endless possibilities. Of course the RE Market has been an incredible roller coaster ride at the very least in these past 20 years but I hope to continue to enjoy it once again in a wonderful corner office in downtown Newport. I look forward to meeting you there."
